All Nations Volleyball
In the spring of 2022, a small group of Afghan refugees began a journey of healing, connection, and growth in Salem, Oregon. Having been suddenly evacuated from their homeland, many of them faced the unimaginable challenge of leaving loved ones behind while adapting to a new life in a foreign land. The weight of uncertainty and heartache was heavy, but instead of being consumed by despair, they decided to act.
The Beginnings at Bush Park
What started as a casual weekend activity at Bush Park quickly became much more. Every weekend, they gathered to play volleyball, sharing not only the game but also stories, struggles, and laughter. These moments offered a sense of normalcy and hope.
Finding a New Home for Volleyball
As the rainy season set in, playing at the park became impossible. But thanks to the generosity of Baraka and the Salem Alliance Church, they found an indoor space at the Lutheran Church on Baxter. Every Saturday afternoon, they continued playing, building skills and strengthening bonds.
By 2023, with Baraka’s help, they secured funds to rent a court at the NPJ Sports Complex. This allowed them to play consistently every week, fostering even more growth within the group. In October 2024, the volleyball family became part of All Nations Sports, supported by Salem for Refugees.
More Than a Game
"Our volleyball gatherings have grown significantly from those early days at Bush Park. What was once a small group of newcomers is now a thriving community of players with diverse skill levels, shared experiences, and a deep sense of camaraderie.
These gatherings have become a lifeline for many. For newcomers, it’s a place to meet others, share advice, and learn about life in the U.S.—whether it’s navigating car insurance or finding employment opportunities. For everyone, it’s a source of mental and emotional support. "
